  • 100 sheets of natural white 90gsm paper, acid-free and free of optical brighteners.
  • Light-grain surface for good grip with pencil, graphite, charcoal, sanguine and pastel.
  • Spiral binding with microperforated sheets that tear out cleanly.
  • A3 size (29.7 x 42cm), with plenty of room for broad gestures and larger compositions.
  • Made by Canson, Guarro range.

At this size, the paper behaves just like the rest of the pad: it takes pencil, graphite, charcoal, sanguine and pastel well, thanks to a light grain that isn't rough enough to get in the way of fine linework. The extra room makes more of a difference with media that call for broad, sweeping marks, like charcoal or a stick of pastel.

As with the rest of the range, this 90gsm paper isn't suited to watercolour or other wet media: water makes it cockle and won't give good results. For watercolour painting, a dedicated paper is a better choice, usually 240-300gsm or heavier.

The A3 size (29.7 x 42cm) gives you the space for broad gestures, figure studies or compositions larger than a small pad allows. If you'd rather have something easier to carry around or use for daily practice, the Guarro Sketch Pad A4 might suit you better.

Prefer something easier to carry? This pad is also available in A4, more practical for everyday use or taking with you.

Can this pad handle wet media like watercolour?

Not really: this is a 90gsm paper made for dry media, and water tends to make it cockle. For watercolour, a dedicated paper is best, usually from 240gsm upward.

Do I need to use fixative spray with charcoal or pastel?

It's a good idea. Charcoal, sanguine and pastel smudge easily, and a fixative spray for dry media helps stop the drawing from smudging when you handle the sheet or store the pad.

Is this a good size for figure studies or life drawing sessions?

Yes, it's one of the most common uses for A3: it gives plenty of room for broad gestures and full poses, which an A4 pad can feel cramped for.

Will it fit in a standard A3 portfolio or case?

Yes, at 29.7 x 42cm it fits portfolios and cases made for A3 sheets.

How do I tear out the sheets without ripping them?

Each sheet is microperforated along the spiral, so you can tear it out cleanly by pulling gently along that line.

Should I get the A4 or the A3?

The A3 (29.7 x 42cm) gives you more room for figure studies, larger compositions or broad gestures. If you'd rather have something easier to carry around or use for daily practice, the A4 is the more convenient option.
