A pantograph is a technical drawing instrument made up of parallelogram-linked articulated arms. You fix one end, trace over the original drawing with the tracing point, and guide its path: the pencil at the other end reproduces the same drawing enlarged or reduced, keeping the exact proportions (a homothetic transformation).

This Graphoplex model measures 35 cm, is manually operated (no motor or electronics), and is made of wood with a grey finish that imitates metal. Unlike a reduction compass, which transfers individual points and measurements one at a time, the pantograph traces the whole drawing in a single continuous stroke: it's faster for copying an entire image, while the compass is more precise for specific reference points.

If you'd like to understand the mechanism in more detail before buying, you'll find the full explanation (in Spanish) here: what is a pantograph and what is it for.

Frequently asked questions about this pantograph

How do you use this pantograph?

One end is fixed to the table with a clamping screw; you trace over the original drawing with the tracing point, and the pencil mounted on the other arm reproduces the same line enlarged or reduced, depending on the position of the articulated arms.

Is this pantograph manual or electric?

It's manual: there's no motor or electronics, just the mechanical system of articulated arms. The enlargement or reduction scale is set by moving the pivot points along the rods.

How is it different from a reduction compass?

The pantograph traces the whole drawing in one continuous motion, ideal for copying an entire image. A reduction compass transfers individual points and measurements one at a time: slower for tracing a whole drawing, but more precise for specific reference points.

How long is this pantograph?

It measures 35 cm in length. It's made of wood with a grey finish that imitates metal, and weighs 6 kg.

What material is it made of?

The body is wood, finished in grey to imitate metal. The joints and clamping screws are genuine metal. It weighs 6 kg, which gives it stability while working.
