What it is used for
Titanium white is used to make white paint and, above all, to lighten and cover: mixed with another pigment it raises the tone without losing body and hides the layers underneath. It is used with the usual binders: oil for oil paint, acrylic medium for acrylic, gum arabic for watercolour and gouache, and egg yolk for tempera. As an indicative starting point, in oil use about 3 parts pigment to 2 parts oil; always adjust with a small test.
If you are choosing between titanium and zinc, titanium covers much more and zinc white is more transparent. To see the rest of the range, go to powder pigments.
How to use it
- Protect yourself: wear a dust mask and gloves, and avoid draughts that lift the dust.
- Wet the pigment and grind it on glass to a fine paste.
- Add the binder a little at a time and test colour and adhesion before preparing a larger quantity.
