Zinc white pigment is zinc oxide (PW4) as a dry powder with no binder. It is a cool white, more translucent than titanium white, that lightens colours without covering them. Artist grade, in a 500 g bag.

Features

  • Pigment: zinc white (zinc oxide, PW4)
  • Form: dry powder, no binder
  • Size: 500 g bag
  • Grade: Artist
  • Opacity: translucent; covers considerably less than titanium white
  • Lightfastness: no manufacturer data
  • Reference: 75-APBZ

What it is used for

Zinc white is chosen when you want to lighten without covering: it gives luminous glazes, clean mixes and cool tones, and it is widely used in watercolour and gouache (where it is also called Chinese white). Mix it with the binder for each technique: gum arabic, acrylic medium, oil or egg yolk. In oil, use zinc with caution: in thick layers it can form a brittle film, so it is kept for glazes and mixes rather than as a base white.

If you need a white that covers, see titanium white pigment. To see the rest of the range, go to powder pigments.

How to use it

  1. Protect yourself: wear a dust mask and gloves, and avoid draughts that lift the dust.
  2. Wet the pigment and grind it on glass to a fine paste.
  3. Add the binder a little at a time and test colour and adhesion before preparing a larger quantity.

Frequently asked questions

What is zinc white pigment?

It is zinc oxide powder: a cool, translucent inorganic white pigment that you mix with a binder to make paint.

What is the difference between zinc white and titanium white?

Zinc white is more translucent and has considerably less tinting power; titanium white is much more opaque and covers more. Zinc is chosen for glazes and soft mixes.

Can zinc white be used in oil?

Yes, but with caution: in thick layers it can form a brittle film. It is used mainly in glazes and mixes.

What is Chinese white?

It is the name zinc white goes by in watercolour and gouache, where it is used to lighten without losing transparency.

How much is in the pack and do I need protection?

The bag holds 500 g. When handling it, wear a dust mask and gloves, wet the powder when mixing and clean up with a damp cloth.
