Spanish white, also called whiting, is natural calcium carbonate (chalk) as a fine powder with no binder. In Studio grade, this 500 g bag is used mainly as a filler and white base: for traditional gesso, primers, putties and paint fillers.

Features

  • Material: natural calcium carbonate (Spanish white / whiting, PW18)
  • Form: fine powder, no binder
  • Packaging: bag
  • Size: 500 g
  • Grade: Studio
  • Reference: 66-BEB500

What it is used for

Spanish white has low covering power and turns translucent in oil, so it is not used as a paint white but as a filler and a base. Common uses are: traditional gesso, primers and grounds for rigid supports, putties and plasters, and a filler that gives body to paints and pastes. For a covering paint white, see titanium white and the rest of our powder pigments.

Studio grade: in Spanish white, quality is set by the purity of the calcium carbonate, its whiteness and the fineness of the grind. The Studio grade is the option for general use and workshop jobs; if you want the highest quality in our range, there is the 1 kg Artist Spanish white.

Why the 500 g size: it is the bag for trying things out, for small pieces or for keeping a white filler to hand without buying too much.

Handling and storage

  • Wear a dust mask and gloves, and avoid draughts that lift the dust.
  • Clean up with a damp cloth rather than sweeping dry.
  • Keep the bag tightly closed, dry, with the original label.

Frequently asked questions

What is Spanish white?

It is natural calcium carbonate, also called whiting or chalk, ground to a fine powder. It is used as a filler and white base, not as a high-covering pigment.

What is Spanish white used for in painting?

For traditional gesso, primers, putties and plasters, and as a filler that gives body to paints and pastes.

What is the difference between Artist and Studio Spanish white?

The Artist grade is the highest quality in our range; quality is set by the purity of the calcium carbonate, its whiteness and the fineness of the grind. The size also changes: Artist comes in a 1 kg bag and Studio in a 500 g bag.

Can it be used as white paint?

Not normally: it has low opacity and turns translucent in oil. For a white with strong covering power, titanium white is used.

Do I need protection when handling it?

Yes, basic protection: a dust mask and gloves, and clean up with a damp cloth rather than sweeping dry.
